The club has been running the annual summer camp for member's families and friends for over 40 years.

Those that arrived first got the sites overlooking the river. These were slightly raised and stayed drier during the very heavy rain.

Club Trip January 2011

The Summit Plateau of Mt Ruapehu in summer. Layers of ash on old compacted glacial ice make for very awkward traveling in the summer months. After the club camp, many members spent another week or so at the club hut on Mt Ruapehu. A great place in the summer as well as the winter. There are plenty of walks and tramps to do lower down and of course there is the top of the mountain to explore.

Mt Pirongia is an relatively recent volcano with a number of ancient craters that now form a tangle of ridges. It covers a large area and most tracks are very rough once they gain altitude.

This was a club trip staying at a nearby backpackers and doing day trips. The trip over Mt Pirongia took us about 9 hours.

The games were held at the campsite and the kayak races were held in the river adjacent to the camp.

Lake Colenso.

The maori name of Kokopunui, refers to the presence of native fish, and eels, in the lake and thus its significance as a source of food.

From an ecological point of view this remote lake has significant value. There are no introduced weeds or fish in the lake and the surrounding swampy basin is the only area of lowland podocarp forest found in the Ruahine Range. This podocarp forest and the surrounding red beech forest provide a habitat for more than twenty species of native birds including whio and kaka.
